Reply to this topicThe cache disk feature of unRAID greatly increases the perceived performance of the system when writing data to a parity-protected array. It is particularly useful for users who write data to the array on a regular basis, and can also be used as a scratch disc for certain applications. The feature was introduced in version 4.
A cache disk is a hard drive that is not part of the normal parity-protected array. You may read data from or write data to the cache share just as you would any other disk share. As the cache disk is outside of the parity-protected array, writes will be much faster, but of course if this disk fails, all its data may be lost. The real power of a cache disk is realized when User Shares are enabled.
Hence any object — a file or directory - created on a user share is created on the cache disk provided that enough space is available. Therefore, when you browse the files on a user share, the listings will transparently include objects on the cache disk as well as those on the other data disks.
The default schedule is to wake up at AM every day. As there is a lag between the time objects are created on the cache disk, and when they are moved to the array, it may be desirable to disable the cache disk for certain shares.
Each user share therefore has the option to disable the use of the cache disk for that share. This section is present on the Share Settings page when user shares are enabled, and a cache disk is present and formatted. If there is less than this amount of free space then the object will be created on the array instead. The emphasis here is on 'perceived'. The real, behind-the-scenes write speed of your unRAID server is unchanged by the addition of a cache drive.
A cache drive simply grants you the fastest transfer that your hardware will allow by deferring the inevitable parity calculation until a later time am server time, by default. How much of a write speed improvement can you expect to see from using a cache drive?
That depends on your hardware. Slower hardware will of course result in slower transfer speeds. Without a cache drive: unRAID 4. With a cache drive: unRAID 4. So generally speaking, a server with a cache drive has write speeds x faster than the same server without a cache drive. The Mover is a utility that runs periodically to move files off the cache disk and onto parity-protected data disk s.
If Mover logging is enabled, the mover will record all its activity to the system log. By default the mover is scheduled to run every day at AM. This may be changed by defining your own Mover schedule string in crontab format.
If the mover finds no files to move, and the disks are spun-down, the disks will not spin up. A warm spare is a hard drive that you have installed in your server to prepare for the eventuality of one of your other hard drives failing. It requires that the warm spare drive be as large or larger than your parity drive and your largest data drive.
When a drive does eventually fail, you simply stop the array via the Main pageunassign the dead drive via the Devices pageassign the warm spare also on the Devices pageand then start the array back on the Main page.Product Pricing Community Blog. The one step that is unique to this process is making sure the card is not set as our systems default bios from the startup screen.
Once thats all set, you can boot up your server and continue with the next steps. I have read many reports that this has solved peoples problems.
The first step is downloading the most recent disk image for windows 10 from Microsoft. You can get this from the official Microsoft website. Then from your computer where you downloaded the iso, navigate to the share and copy your fresh new iso over to it. Navigate to the Settings tab, and click on VM Manager. Click on the dropdown next to this second option and make sure the newest version is selected and then click on the download button next to it.
It should look something like this:. If it does not, we can boot our VM in legacy mode which I will explain later but I have had issues trying to get this to work. There is one issue with all of the more recent version of these bios roms, and by more recent I mean most of them I had this issue with my GTX I got 9 years ago.
The nvidia vbios files will have an nvidia header on them which prevents them from working in a VM. To fix this, we will need to download a hex editor and manually remove this header. Download one of these and load up your vbios file. We will need to delete everything above this line, and save the new version of the rom.
Once done copy this file over to somewhere on your server, I personally just put it with the Windows iso and the virio drivers. However, before you begin the process make sure to plug in a USB mouse and keyboard that we will use to setup the Windows 10 OS.
Give it whatever name and description you want. For the rest of the fields, you can leave them as default unless I say otherwise. Later you can add more but there have been some reported issues getting windows installed with more than one.
However this is only an issue if your CPU has multiple cores which mine does not. You can leave the Machine field on the default ifx but if you are trying to troubleshoot issues, one thing you could try is changing this to the most recent Q I am not sure what these mean but thats just what I read when looking through forum posts.
However if you do have to switch, you will have to recreate the VM entirely.Internet Explorer or Firefox. Normally, to connect to the Management Utility, simpy type the name of your server into your browser's address bar:. The default server name is tower. Alternately, instead of typing the server name, you could enter the server's IP address.
The home page of the Management Utility is called Main. This page is divided into four horizontal sections:. There is a line in this section for each disk hard drive of your unRAID server. In the unRAID organization, one hard drive serves as the parity disk; the other hard drives are called data disks. The parity disk is what provides the redundancy in a RAID system.
The parity disk is updated every time you write any of the data disks.
If a data disk fails, there is sufficient information on the parity disk to permit the system to reconstruct the contents of the failed disk onto a new disk. The data disks are exported and appear as shares named disk1, disk2, etc. This is the temperature reported by the hard drive via S. This is because sending the command to a hard drive to obtain S.
This is the amount of free space in the disk's file system, expressed as the number of byte blocks. The free space of a freshly formatted disk will always be less than the disk's raw size because of file system overhead.
The Read and Write statistics display the number of byte read and write operations that have been performed by the disk. The Error statistic displays the number of read and write operations which have failed. In a protected array, any single-disk read error will be corrected on-the-fly using parity reconstruction. The Error counter will increment for every such occurrence. Any single-disk write error will result in the Error counter being incremented and that disk being disabled.
Upon system boot, the statistics start out cleared; and they may be manually cleared at any time; refer to the Settings page. Normally following system boot up the array complete set of disks is automatically started brought on-line and exported as a set of shares.
But if there's been a change in disk configuration, such as a new disk added, the array is left stopped so that you can confirm the configuration is correct.By DonnypOctober 21, in General Support.
I have recently installed a m. It's a gb Samsung evo Unraid see's it and identifies it. I would also like to load plex onto it and use that instead of having to leave my main computer on, as that's how I've been running plex over the years. I know to install the docker, I'm just unsure of how to set it up now that I added a cache drive after the fact and how to setup my folder structures.
Just make sure to install the docker to the cachedrive it should end up in a share called appdata that is configured as a cachedrive only share. If you were using dockers before the cachedrive got added they are on the array now just stop all dockers, stop docker itself, move appdata to the cachedrive, set it cache onlyand restart your docker and dockers.
Then just install the docker, when you see a plex folder appearing under the appdata you are fine. This is where I get stuck when trying to add the Plex Docker to my server. I'm unsure of what to put for each path configuration. I have Movies, TV Shows and music. I mainly use it for movies and tv shows though. Would like to try adding music to it at some point. I've attached a picture to possibly help explain what I'm talking about. I did try searching here, on the plex forums and google but didn't find a whole lot.
I did stumble across this thread, but not too sure of what information to put and the settings seem a bit different now. Adding Plex to UnRaid. I ramble on a bit, and struggle to try and explain path mappings in English, but the concept is easy to grasp, just hard to explain. And the pic hasn't been updated for 6. Awesome, thanks Squid! Your help is greatly appreciated. I will read through that thread and see what I can figure out. You can post now and register later.
