Exactly eighty years ago, Pablo Picasso took on a commission that would forever change both his career and the entire outlook of modern art. In many ways, it can be observed as Pablo's crown piece - all of the visual features he became renowned for were placed inside Guernica 's composition and no other painting of modern art reached the kind of cult status this artwork possesses.
While the German and Soviet pavilions at the same event were gigantic architectural displays of authority and power, the Spanish Republic, desperately in need of financial support, opted for a modest structure filled with world-class modern art. However, it was a tragic event that changed Pablo's mind, making him change the course of his design entirely. The bombing was to take place during a market day, which meant that civilians, predominantly women and children as men were off fighting the war, would be outdoors in public squares. The brutal bombing that took place on that day killed hundreds of people and was the first instance in the Spanish Civil War in which a defenseless city was attacked.
Like countless others, Picasso opened his morning newspaper on April 27th to find images of the destruction of Guernica . Pictures and stories covering the event devastated the artist who was at that time already well-accustomed to living in Paris, the City of Light. Since Picasso was a dedicated leftist and the idea of war lingered in his mind ever since he was criticized for not fighting in World War I, the bombing of Guernica struck him with a particular force . After a few days of processing his emotions, he took to his studio on Rue des Grands Augustins and began new sketches for the Republic's commission.

Printmaking held a central place for Picasso throughout his life, and he became one of the finest and most prolific printmakers of all time.
Shortly before this revelation, during what he would later describe as "the worst time in my life," Picasso produced Minotauromachy.
A large, ambitious etching, Minotauromachy is filled with Picasso's personal symbolism. The Minotaur, whose gesture and demeanor are traditionally interpreted as threatening, appears to shield himself from the light cast by the candle. Between girl and beast, a terrified horse rears on its hind legs in panic; entrails ooze from a gash in its belly presumably caused by the Minotaur. On the far left, a bearded man who may also represent Picassoobserves this scene from a ladder propped against a wall, while two young women with two doves watch impassively from a window in a plain stone building.
The Minotaur, a frequently occurring figure in Picasso's graphic art of the s, embodied conflicting aspects of the artist's personality and signified, above all, internal turmoil.
In Minotauromachythrough the use of highly personal themes and motifs, Picasso forged a multilayered, universal allegory of good and evil, violence and innocence, suffering and salvation.
Two years later, he would adopt much of the print's imagery for his great mural painting Guernica his outraged response to the Spanish civil war. This exhibition offers the rare opportunity to trace Picasso's creative process through the evolution of a single enigmatic image, as Minotauromachy 's multiple states progress from conception to consummation like the still frames of a silent film.

After completing the print, in preparation for an edition that would number up to fifty, Picasso had the copper plate "steel-faced," a process in which a thin electroplated coating of steel is applied to the surface of the plate to preserve the quality of printing through an entire edition.
Steel-facing can diminish a print's vibrancy; all of the impressions of this set, with the sole exception of the colored seventh state, are pre-steel-facing. Forms consist primarily of outline, with little shading or modeling. Only a few areas are darkly "bitten" the action of the acid bath that burns through the exposed parts of the copper plate, creating the lines that will ultimately be inked : these include the Minotaur's mane, his right hand and arm, his cape, the hair and flowers of the standing girl, the interior of the arched window, and some sections of ground and sky.Sign Up.

The unusual friendship that linked the renowned Spanish artist Picasso to the Irish photographer Edward Quinn is revealed through the intimacy of the shots that recount Picasso in his private and public life. Accepted into his private life, Quinn followed Picasso to the French Riviera, photographing him for about twenty years. On March 23,Quinn photographed him for the first time while Picasso was conducting his work and thus became one of the few photographers who were allowed to photograph him while he was creating his art.
The protagonists of these works are the women who loved the artist. The master is portrayed among his lovers and friends, as well as his children, with several familiar scenes that became subjects of his art, revealing how he was inspired by everyday things and people, as well as the extraordinary. Let us begin by examining the specific techniques behind Cubism as a whole before moving on. As the name hints, Cubism involves the use of geometric shapes and patterns to represent a specific form. However, we need to make a point to emphasise that cubes were only a portion of this concept. Nearly any geometric angle could be employed to achieve the desired result. It can be argued that Cubism was a direct response to the rather traditionalist styles associated with the latter half of the 19th century and in particular, some of the works associated with Victorian painters.
To put this another way, they hoped to literally embrace the two-dimensional aspect of the canvas. This was done by breaking a picture down into its geometric components; almost as if reducing its essence to a series of lines and angles.
In order to achieve more depth, many artists such as Picasso would paint these cubes and shapes from multiple perspectives. This would draw the eye of the viewer to specific portions and hopefully, influence his or her impression of the painting as a whole.
Many contemporary scholars have broken the Cubist movement down into two discrete periods. These are known as Early Cubist and High Cubism As Pablo Picasso is often considered to be the father of Cubism, it only stands to reason that his paintings were present from an early stage. The majority of historians believe that Les Demoiselles d'Avignon represents the first famous venture into this field often termed as "Proto Cubism".
